COMMISSIONERS COURT MEETING
The Commissioners Court will meet in Special Session on Wednesday,
January 30, 1991 at 1:30 P.M. in the Commissioners Courtroom of the
Brazos County Courthouse, 300 East 26th Street, Suite 115, Bryan,
Texas to discuss the following matters:
1. Announce the beginning of the Brazos County Sesquicentennial
2. Adjourn

COMMISSIONERS' COURT
SPECIAL MEETING
JANUARY 30, 1991
A special meeting of the Commissioners' Court of Brazos
County, Texas was held in the Commissioners' Courtroom in the
Courthouse in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 1:30
p.m. on Monday, January 30, 1991, with the following members
of the Court present:
R.. J. Holmgreen, County Judge, Presiding;
Gary Norton, Commissioner of Precinct 1;
Walter Wilcox, Commissioner of Precinct 2;
Randy Sims, Commissioner of Precinct 3;
Milton Turner, Commissioner of Precinct 4;
Mary Ann Ward, County Clerk.
The following citizens and officials were in attendance:

Commissioner Sims gave the invocation and led the pledge
of allegiance.
Commissioner Wilcox announced the beginning of the Brazos
County Sesquicentennial celebration. He then turned the
meeting over to Commissioner Norton who read the following
excerpt from the book Brazos County History; Rich Past --Bright
Future published as a Texas Sesquincentennial event in 1986.
"So, on 30 January 1841, the Congress of the
Republic of Texas created Navasota County, which
comprised all the territory of Washington County
lying between the Brazos and Navasota Rivers --plus,
an additional 15,000 acres taken from Robertson

County. Navasota County became Brazos County
almost a full year later, when James A. Head, the
Representative of Navasota County, introduced a
bill in the Texas Congress in January 1842. But
only the name changed --the boundaries this time
remained the same, and remain the same today."
Commissioner Norton stated that the City of College
Station Parks and Recreation Brazos Folk Fest week in
September will center on celebrating 150 years of Brazos
County progress.
Commissioner Wilcox then turned the floor over to Phyllis
Dozier, Director of the Brazos Center, who added that all
county mail has a commemorative cancellation, bannners and
flags will fly at all county buildings, all county departments
have seals to display, a small cluster of pecan trees planted
this year will also be dedicated as a lasting commemoration of
the 150th anniversary, the arts council's annually held youth
art show will have a special entry division for Brazos county
and its history and a special commemorative cachet will be
avaiable for hand cancellation probably in April.
Commissioner Sims informed the Court that Boonville
Cemetery will have a dedication ceremony for improvements and
restoration sometime in April.
Walter Carl Jones, representative of the Historical
Society, informed the Court that this year was the 300th
anniversary of the Old Spanish Road (El Camino Real). A
caravan will start at the Mexican border and follow the trail
to Brazos County and stop at the Brazos Center and rededicate
the historical markers on April 16, 1991.
Jim Hiney, reporter of the Bryan/College Station Eagle,
explained a feature that will be running in the newpaper
featuring tidbits of information on the area.
Commissioner Wilcox thanked everyone for coming.
There being no further business to come before the Court,
the meeting was adjourned.
