AGENDA FOR COMMIS'SIONERS' COURT MEETING - MONDAY, SEPT. 26, 1988, 1:00 P.M.
1. Pursuant to Section 16.02 of the Texas Racing Act (Article
179e V.A.T.S.) the Commissioners Court will consider and
take action to add the proposition of "legalizing pari-
mutuel wagering on horse races in Brazos County" to the
ballot for the General Election to be held November 8, 1988.

A special meeting of the Commissioners' Court of Brazos
,,County, Texas was held in the Commissioners' Courtroom in the
,,Courthouse in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 1:00
Ip.m. on Monday, September 26, 1988, with the following members

citing local economic considerations such as, increased business ;

for local restaurants, hotels and motels, cooperation between the
i ~
.veterinary school at TAMU and the breeders, more demand for
t`
I!agricultural products from the area and increased tax revenue
;from the facility. i
~I Those in opposition of placing the proposition on the
November general election ballot argued that the residents of the
county had not voiced a desire to see this on the ballot, cost of
I; I
policing the facility, dealing with the indigent families brought
a
in by such a facility and crime statistics.

I; One county resident addressed the Court saying that the
~i
;tissue before the Court was not issue presented above but the
,right of the people to vote on the proposition.
There being no more arguments for or against the issue, the
(County Judge asked for a motion. Commissioner Beard moved to
.I1place the issue on the November 8, 1988 general election ballot
it
Ito allow all the citizens of Brazcs County the opportunity to
t
vote for or against 'legalizing pari-mutuel wagering on horse i
',races in Brazos County.' The motion was seconded by Commissioner

~ITurner and in a show of hands carried unanimously.
III There being no further business to come before the Court,
lithe meeting was adjourned.
