Home My WebLink About1965-11-08-1000AM-Regular'50? 1 October it, 1965 "Honorable W C Davis, County Judge, Brazos County Commissioners Court Bryan, Texas "Dear Judge Davis and County Commissioners "The Bryan Public Schools are sponsoring a new program in Basic Education for adults having less than eight years of school Afternoon and evening classes are planned, which will offer 120 hours of instruction on each of three levels for those who have had 0 to 3 years of school, 4 to 6 years of school, and 7 to 8 years of school The program will be financed through the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, at no cost to the individuate "We feel that it is a fine thing to provide an opportunity for our fellow-citizens, with limited educational backgrounds, to raise their educational status and perhaps improve their way of life Therefore (1) We invite your support of this program with a public statement of endorsement, asking people to take advantage of this opportunity (2) We particularly ask you to encourage your employees who fall within these educational levels to register for classes in the near future-- at no cost "Sincerely, /a/ Alton Bowen Superintendent " It was next brought to the attention of the Court that on August 8, 1906, Tom Syptak a wife conveyed to Brazos County one acre of land, more or less, in the vicinity of Steep Hollow community for use as a public school and which one-acre tract has long since been abandoned by the County and not used for such school purposes for many years. On motion made seconded, and unanimously passed, the Court voted to reconvey such one-acre tract (same being described in Volume 26, page 481, of the Deed Records of Brazos County) to the heirs of Tom Syptak and wife, Rosa Syptak On motion made, seconded, and unanimously passed, the Court voted to increase the Per Diem pay of members of the Grand Jury and Grand Jury Commissioners from five dollars to ten dollars, effective immediately, which increase was requested by Hon John M. Barron, District Judge On motion made, seconded, and unanimously passed, the Court voted to accept the Saddle Club property on Tabor Road and assume the indebtedness owing thereon, provided the convey- ance to be made by the Bryan Saddle Club, Inc , would be without restriction or limitation on the use of said property by the County , Next was considered the bids for a new desk in the Brazos County Health Unit, such bids being, as follows News Office Supply, $221 00, Otis McDonald Business Machines, $133.36. C Pavia "October 15, 1965 County Judge of Brazos County and - The Commissioners Court of Brazos County Bryan, Texas "Gentlemen RE Wellborn Water Supply Corporation "As required by Article 1433 of Vernon's Annotated Revised Civil Statutes and in accordance thereto, the above-named water supply corporation is advising that it proposes to lay its pipes, mains, conductors and other fixtures for conducting water throu*h, under, along, across, and over the public roads in the vicinity of Wellborn, Millican, and College Station, Texas, as shown by the attached map dated Oct 11, 1965, from Garland Engineering Company, Waco, Texas, made a part of this letter for all purposes "If the court so desires, it is requested that the place along said right of ways be designated where such lines shall be constructed "Signed and submitted this 15th day of October, 1965 i "COFER AND DILLON, Attorneys By /a/ D. Brooks Cofer, Jr Attorneys for Wellborn Waterl Supply Corporation " On motion made, seconded, and unanimously passed, the Court approved, as follows "The Wellborn Water Supply Corporation is hereby authorized to lay its pipes, mains and conductors, and all other fixtures for conducting water through, under, along, across and over the public roads of the County of Brazos, State of Texas, at the places designated on the map dated Oct 11, 1965, of Garland Engineering Company, Waco, Texas It is understood between the Commissioners' Court and the said corporatioi that the Commissioners' Court may require such corporation, at its own expense, to relocate its lines located on any County roads so as to permit the widening or changing of traffic lanes, by giving thirty (30) days written notice to such corporation and specifying the line or lines to be moved, and indicating the place on the new right-of-way where such line or lines may be placed "All water lines which may be placed under this agreement shall be placed in accordance with the regulations and requirements of the State Highway Commission and the Commissioners' Court "Approved and signed this 8 day of November, 1965 "Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texai BY W C Davis, County Judge " + Y all L u~ c DE C U-11 1 ~ r .l ~ r t 5M November 8, 1965 1 t i 1 i ~ err J - 1 The County Judge next presented the following letter from Hon John H Lindell, Director of Field Staff of the State Department of Public Welfare, and on motion made, seconded, and unanimously passed the Court voted to accept the provisions of such letter relative to pro- viding a District Child Welfare office in Brazos County "STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE John H Reagan Building Austin, Texas 78701 "October 8, 1965 "Honorable W C Davis, County Judge Brazos County Courthouse Bryan, Texas "Dear Judge Davis "This letter will confirm our conversation on October 5, 1965, regarding the possibility of child welfare services in Brazos County and surrounding counties We are pleased to hear that Brazos County is interested in protective services for dependent and neglected children and it appears to us that Bryan is a logical headquarters for services in Brazos and surrounding counties "Our State Department of Public Welfare will be happy to plan toward the establishment of child welfare services in Brazos County providing the County will agree to assume certai Ir responsibilities Our Department would assume responsibility for providing staff and administering the program of protective services for children if Brazos County would provide office space, office equipment and supplies, travel expenses, and child care cos for Brazos County children. At the present time, it appears that it would be the summer of 1966 before such child welfare services could be established The details of the division of responsibilities between the County and our Department would be worked out in detail but this letter should give you some general idea of the division of responsibilities "If Brazos County is interested in proceeding with plans toward the establishment of chil welfare services, we would appreciate having a letter from you and the County Commission era indicating such interest It was a pleasure to meet and talk with you and we are hoping that we may be of service to your County "Sincerely yours, r /s/ J.
