COUNTY OF BRAZOS
Is W. T. McDonald, District Judge of the 85th Judicial
District of Texas, hereby fix and determine the salary of Mrs.
Mildred Carpenter, official shorthand reporter for said 85th
Judicial District of Texas, at six thousand dollars per year,
beginning July 1, 1958, pursuant to authority vested in me under
the statute. This salary, as required by law, is to be divided
between Brazos and Robertson Counties according to population of
the two Counties shown by the last official census. The 1950
census shows 38,390 population for Brazos County, and 19,908
population for Robertson County, so that the portion of the salary
to be paid Brazos County amounts to 38.390 of the total sum,
58,298
and the portion to be paid by Robertson County amounts to 19.908
58,298
the said sums to be paid monthly in twelve equal installments
from each of the two said Counties.
This order nullifies the previous order made and entered
by this Court on January 1, 1955, recorded in Volume To Page 531,
of the Civil Minutes of the District Court of Brazos County, Texas.

Whereupon on motion duly seconded and unanimously adopted, the salary of the
Court Reporter was ordered paid from the Jury Fund effective from July 1, 1958, at the rata
of $3,960.00 per annum with the understanding that the other $2,040.00 will be paid by
Robertson County, Texas, so as to make this ealary at the sate of $6,000.00 per am=*

A special meeting of the Commissioners' Court was held in the Commissioners
Courtroom in the Courthouse at Bryan, Texas, beginning at 10:90 ao m., on Thursday,
June 26, 1958, with the following presents

The Court received formal written requests from Mrs. Marjorie E. Burkhalter, Tax
Assessor-Collector of Brazos County, Texas, on regular deputation forme, for the appointment
of deputies in the office, as follower

Charlene Taylor,
Ethel E. Silseth,
Maggie Nowak, and
Maudelle Wilkerson.
Whereupon the motion was made, duly seconded, and unanimously adopted by which the
Court approved the appointments and authorized the County Judge to administer the official
oaths to the said appointees.
Came on to be considered the matter of canvassing the returns received by the Court
from the Special School Election held in Brazos County Common School District Noe. 10 and 27,

WHEREAS, on the 19th day of May, A. D. 1958, there were
presented to me three petitions for election to be held in Brazos
County Common School District No. 10, (Kurten), and in Brazos County
Common School District No. 27, (Smetana), to determine whether or not
a majority of the legally qualified property tax-paying citizens
residing within said districts are in favor of the three propositions

AND WHEREAS, the said three petitions bearing the sign turesg
respectively, of Frank Nemec and 22 others, being more than 20 of the
legally qualified property tax-paying voters residing within Brazos
County Common School District No. 270 (Smetana); W. W. Humphries and
1 21 others, D. F. Quarles and 33 others; the said last two petitions
containing a total of 56 signatures constituting more than 20 of the
legally qualified property tax-paying voters residing within Brazos {
County Common School District No. 10, (Kurten), and said petitions
all being otherwise in conformity with the law; and
WHEREAS, it appears that Brazos County contains a population
of 38090 inhabitants according to the 1950 United States census, and
furthermore that Brazos County Common School District No. 10, (Kurten),
and Brazos County Common School District No. 27, (Smetana), both have
heretofore been properly and legally constituted,
NOW, THEREFORE, Is A. S. Ware, in my official capacity as
County Judge of Brazos County, Texas, in response to said petitions,

Each of the above named presiding judges shall select two
clerks to assist in the conduct of said election, and each of said
presiding fudges shall within five days after said election has been
` held make due return thereof to the Cn missioners Court of Brazos Counter,
Teuas, as is required by law for holding general elections.
All persons who are legally qualified voters of this State and
County under our Constitution and laws and who are resident property tax-
paying citizens in the said two common school districts shall be entitled
to vote at said election, and all voters who favor the propositions shall
have written or printed on their ballots the followings

From the returns delivered to the Court and duly canvassed, it was found
and declared that in Common School District No. 10, there were 14 votes cast at the
Xurten Schoolhouse polling place, and that 13 of said votes were in favor of all three
propositions voted upon, and one vote was against all, three propositional and that at the
polling place at John M. Moore Schoolhouse there were a total of 49 votes cast, all of
which were in favor of all three propositions and no votes were cast
against any one of the

three. Tbess figures show that out of a total of 63 votes polled, there were 62 in favor
of all three propositions voted upon and one vote cast against all three propositions.

In Common School District No. 27 (Smetana), it was noted that out of a total of
56 votes cast, there were 16 in favor of the first proposition and 40 against it, 19 in
favor of the second proposition and 38 against it, and 17 votes in favor of the third
proposition and 38 against it.
From the foregoing returns, it was found and declared by the Court that the
voters of gurten Consolidated Cogan School District No. 10 had approved the three
propositions and that the voters of Common School District No. 27 (Smetana) had rejected
all three of the propositions. As a result of the said election, it was found and
declared by the Court that the consolidation and other proposals failed because of their

The Court received and approved, as submitted, the report of the Brasos County
Health Unit for the month of Cay, 1958.
On Motion duly seconded and unanimously adopted, the Court approved for payment
to Raymond B. Buchanan, Deputy Tax Aseeaeor-Collector, for expenses of assessing taxes

during the period beginning November 1, 1957, and ending May 31, 1958, in the anount of
$600.00, as heretofore authorised by the Court.
On motion duly seconded and unanimously adopted, the Court approved payment of
an item of $25.00 payable to Bell Electronics, 504 Park Place, College Station, Texas, for
installing a radio in the Liquor Board Agent's automobile on may 30. 1958.
On motion duly seconded and unanimously adopted, the Court voted to allocate the
sum of $1,500.00 to the office of Tax Assessor-Collector for employment of needed extra
help, with the expressed provision that this allocation of funds is for the remainder of
1958.
Whereupon the Court adjourned.
