Brazes County ~nprove~ent Die, riot No. I (Levee) Tez Rats Is ~l. O0 per
Assessed velustion within the
O~as on to be considered the matter of repaLra to Eoppe Bridge across the Brazes
the Court havin~ heretofore found that usrtain vital repairs and additions w~l~ b~ .J~.nedie~sl
necessary in order to protect said bridge. ~he Court also considered the followLn~ com-
munication of ~une 2b f~om ~ro ~eorge ~. ~arrett, Division High.ay Engineer, State Highway
Department, of Bryan, Texas:
~une 2~,
~udge A. S. Ware:
Dear Zudge~
Attached here~o is an estimate of cost for buLldin~ the steel bent at west e~d of Koppe'
Bridge°
~wo items on this estimate are rather hard to definitely dst rmina approximate
The item of welding, rivetin~, and oonneotin~ could increase ~00o00 easily if enough
of the hank should erode to cause additional X braoin6 necessary between the steal piling.
'l~e item of moving in and out sould be less if the distance of oontrsotar's equipnent
haulin~ is reduced.
It is apparent that some type repair is needed at wgst end of Lopps*e Bridge,
From Observation I made I believe tha~ the s~lppin~ of the earth fro~ the west a~ut~sn~
is due to the excessive wattin~ of a lower layer of silt and the welsht of the earth above
causes this to flow to the river and then the top layers of earth settle and slide ~nto the
Brazes River ~hanne£°
It is ~y reco~endation that a steel piling ~snt be constructed to avoid the trusses
being damaged. This bent to consist of four 12' x ~ lb, H Bea~ being dr~ve~ for minhnum
of 80* below bridge floor or to refusal; two H beam at sash end of present cent, &hess
beams to ce utilized as support for prsean~ truss. TO do this the truss w~l~ have to
raised et west end enough to allow the removal of present concrete oep and substitute tm
18e ! beam for support of the trues°
The present timber pilin~ can re~ain in place and be used aa support for a timber
bulkhead. This ~ul~heed to act as a retainer for the earth that supports the road
preaching this bridges
! recommend that ~hie work 9e done prior to the fall end w~nter rainy season°
This wor~ will not necessarily stop the ~ove~snt of the river banks, but it will
dues this ~ove~ent. However, th~s tower would hold the truss even though all the eerth~,
should erode fro~ around it.
! recommend that the two old cylinders that are now a~anding e~out midway of west
span ~e pulled over toward ~he river ~ank°
