THE COMMISSIONERS COURT WILL MEET IN A WORKSHOP SESSION ON
TUESDAY, APRIL 9, 2002 AT 10:30 A.M. IN THE COMMISSIONERS
COURTROOM OF THE BRAZOS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 300 EAST 26TH
STREET, SUITE 115, BRYAN, TEXAS.
1. Call to Order.
2. Discussion regarding distribution of Tobacco Settlement Proceeds.
3. Discussion regarding County facilities, to include current and future needs
and plans.
4. Adjourn.
The Courthouse is wheelchair accessible. Handicap parking spaces are available. Any request for Sign

COMMISSIONERS' COURT
WORKSHOP SESSION
APRIL 9, 2002
The Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texas met in
a Workshop Session in the Commissioners' Courtroom in the
Courthouse in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 10:00
a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 with the following members of
the Court present:
• Alvin W. Jones, County Judge, Presiding;
Tony Jones, Commissioner of Precinct 1;
Wm. S. Thornton, Commissioner of Precinct 2;
C.B. Jones, Commissioner of Precinct 3;
Carey Cauley, Jr., Commissioner of Precinct 4;
Karen McQueen, County Clerk.
Attached is a list of the citizens and officials in
attendance.
The Commissioners Court met in Workshop Session to
discuss the following:
1. Tobacco Settlement Proceeds. The County Judge stated
he believed the intent was to use the interest plus any
money not used from the previous years for health care.
The figures of unused money from previous years are
conflicting between the Auditor and the Health
Department. The County Judge suggested that the
• Departments sit down together and nail down a figure.
This will be placed on the agenda with a recommendation
of distribution based on the decision of the Committee.

2. County facilities, to include current and future
needs and plans. Carlos Guitron, Director of Building
Maintenance presented to the Court things to consider
while the proposed parking garage is being built; a list
of capital projects requested of Maintenance by various
departments; a plan for departmental storage units and
questions regarding the maintenance of the Exposition
Center and re-design of the Brazos Center.
The meeting was recessed at 12:10 p.m. to be reconvened
at 1:30 p.m. The meeting was reconvened at 1:30 p.m. with all
members of the Court present.
The Sheriff then presented the facility needs of the
Sheriff's Department and his justifications to the Court
for more space. He proposed that the Sheriff's
Department and jail move out with the Detention Center on
Sandy Point Road. Judge Langley spoke in reference to
the use of space if the Sheriff moves out of the
Courthouse. Ernie Laney, Interim Director of Information
Technology said that if the parking garage is built and
they are forced to relocate, it will be costly and can
take up to 6 months to move fiber optics. Mr. Laney
suggested we plan ahead in moving Information Technology
and only move once. Commissioner Cauley suggested
employing a professional to assess our facility needs and
help us plan.

held April 9, 2002 have been examined and approved in open
