BRAZOS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT
THE COMMISSIONERS COURT WILL MEET IN A WORKSHOP SESSION ON
TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 2001, AT 10:00 A.M. IN THE COMMISSIONERS COURTROOM OF
THE BRAZOS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 300 EAST 26' STREET, SUITE 115, BRYAN,
TEXAS.
1. Call to Order.
2. Discussion regarding methods of funding for the Bryan-College Station Economic
Development Corporation.
3. Discussion regarding the "Freeport Exemption."
4. Adjourn.

COMMISSIONERS' COURT
WORK SHOP
JUNE 12, 2001
The Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texas met in
a workshop meeting in the Commissioners' Courtroom in the
Courthouse in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 10:00
a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, 2001, with the following members of
the Court present:

Alvin W. Jones, County Judge, Presiding;
Tony Jones, Commissioner of Precinct 1;
Wm.S. Thornton, Commissioner of Precinct 2, Absent;
Randy Sims, Commissioner of Precinct 3;
Carey Cauley, Jr., Commissioner of Precinct 4;
Karen McQueen, County Clerk.
The attached sheet contains the names of the citizens and
officials that were in attendance.
The Court met to discuss the following matters:

1. Discussion concerning methods of funding for
the Bryan-College Station Economic Development
Corporation. Mervin Peters, presented a
proposal for methods of fending which included
a dedicated sales tax. Patricia Meronoff,
legal counsel, informed the Court that the
issue would have to go to the voters.
2. Discussion concerning the "Freeport
Exemption". Frank Murphy, representative of
the Bryan-College Station Economic Development
Corporation requested the Court to consider
repealing the Order adopted by the
Commissioners Court in December 1989. This
Order required a tax to be collected on
tangible personal property that is forwarded
out of the County within 175 days. Repealing
this Order would establish an exemption for
"Freeport Goods". This action would promote
economic development and provide an incentive
for industries to locate in Brazos County.
Any loss in ad valorem taxes could be offset
by increased tax base due to economic
development. He further stated that the
Cities of Bryan and College Station have the
"Freeport Goods" exemption. The Economic
Development Corporation will request the Bryan
and College Station Independent . School
Districts to approve an exemption very soon.
