HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-03-23-0600PM-Other3 JOINT MEETING BRAZOS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT CITY OF BRYAN AND • CITY OF COLLEGE STATION MARCH 23, 2001 A joint meeting of the Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texas and the City Councils of the Cities of Bryan and College Station was held at the Brazos Center in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2001, with the following members of the Court present: Alvin W. Jones, County Judge, Presiding Tony Jones, Commissioner of Precinct 1; Wm. S. Thornton, Commissioner of Precinct 2; Randy Sims, Commissioner of Precinct 3; Carey Cauley, Jr., Commissioner of Precinct 4; The attached sheet contains the names of the citizens and officials that were in attendance. Judge Jones called the Commissioners Court to order. • Mayor Mcllhaney called the College Station City Council to order. Mayor Stabler called the Bryan City Council to order. Judge Jones welcomed all participants and called the meeting to order. He then turned the meeting over to James Maxey, College Station Council member, who thanked all members of the Court and health Department for their efforts and then gave a presentation on uniform regulations relating to smoking in public. Next there was a presentation by the City Attorneys of Bryan and College Station regarding legal issues relating to smoking in public places. The main thrust of their presentation was how restrictive the cities wanted the ban to be. The following is a list of attendees that made comment for or against the proceedings: • ' . 1. Greg Gummer, President of the Restaurant Association 2. Howard Fredericks, person experience with family smoker 3. Paul MacNamera, Manager of Red Lobster Restaurant 4. Don Bradshear, smoker supported the current ordinances 6. Bob Brown, Manager of the Kettle Restaurant supported current ordinances. 7. Jimmie Luke, opposed to changes is current smoking ordinance 8. Roland Scheitzer, supported stronger non smoking ordinance 9. Joe Smith, opposed stronger non smoking ordinance 10. David Portales, restaurant manager has no smoking on Sundays 11. David McGee, 2 time cancer survivor supports stronger non smoking ordinance 12. Karen Weir, frequents restaurants that do not allow smoking 13. Denise Fries, supports stronger non smoking ordinance 14. Laura Gonzales, owner Garcia's Restaurant asked how this would affect restaurants with patio seating. 15. Mark (illegible), Manager of Chili's Restaurant stated that the current ordinance is strong enough. 16. Carolyn Hughes, supports a smoke free community 17. George Agenby, Manager Kettle Restaurant, it is an individual's choice as to where they want to be. 18. John Bryant, Mechanical Engineer, demonstrated the lack of difference from one area in a room to another when establishing a smoking area. 19. Charlie Ellis, supports a stronger non smoking ordinance. 20. Duane McBride, representative of the American heart Association supports a stronger non smoking ordinance 21. Mike Edwards, night club owner state he believed in human rights 22. John Greer, a non smoker appealed to all to be more tolerant of others 23. Ken Ramos, American heart Association feels officials should legislate on the side of safety 24. Allen Echols does not feel legislation should be based on economics and supports free choice The County Judge thanked the council representatives from both cities for allowing the citizens to have input. He then adjourned the Commissioners Court meeting. Mayor Mcllhaney adjourned the College Station City Council meeting and Mayor Stabler adjourned the Bryan City Council meeting.
