BRAZOS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS' COURT MEETING
THE COMMISSIONERS' COURT WILL MEET IN SPECIAL SESSION ON WED-
NESDAY, JULY 14, 1993 AT 9:00 A.M. FOR THE PURPOSE OF HOLDING
A PUBLIC HEARING ON THE CLOSING OF BOONVILLE CEMETERY TO FUR-
THER BURIALS. THE MEETING WILL BE HELD IN THE COMMISSIONERS'
COURTROOM OF THE BRAZOS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 300 EAST 26TH STREET,
SUI'T'E 115, BRYAN, TEXAS.

PUBLIC HEARING
JULY 14, 1993
The Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texas held a
Public Hearing in the Commissioners' Courtroom in the
Courthouse in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 9:00
a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 1993 to consider the closing of
Boonville Cemetery to further burials. The following members
of the Court were present:
R. J. Holmgreen, County Judge, Presiding;
Gary Norton, Commissioner of Precinct 1;
Walter Wilcox, Commissioner of Precinct 2;
Randy Sims, Commissioner of Precinct 3;
Milton Turner, Commissioner of Precinct 4;
Mary Ann Ward, County Clerk.
The following citizens and officials were in attendance:

The purpose of the Public Hearing was to hear commentary
for and against the proposed closing of Boonville Cemetery to
further burials.
The County Judge stated in his opening remarks that
proper notice of the hearing had been given according to law
and stated that no action would be taken. He explained the
procedures for the hearing and asked those in attendance for
any comments on the subject and asked that they state their

names and organization.
Commissioner Sims gave a brief history of the cemetery.
He described how there had been indiscriminate burials over
the many years and that now there was no way of knowing where
all the graves were located. Commissioner Sims went on to say

that since the cemetery comes under the City Charter it is

required that a sexton oversee the cemetery, preside over
burials and identify every grave.
Colleen Batchelor - asked how much it would cost the
county to comply with the Bryan City Code.
Eugenia Ramsey - said that she has a plot at Boonville
where all her family is buried and that there is a
cyclone fence surrounding the area.
Tommy Preston - said that he was speaking for the McGee
and Preston families stated that he had a plot and
he paid $100.00 for it. He wanted the remainder of
the family to be buried there. He asked why the
county took over Boonville Cemetery.
Steve Jones - thanked the Court for fixing up the eye
sore. He informed the Court that he is trying to
learn where people are buried. He also said that
the county will have a big problem finding the
graves and identifying them. He suggested that
people go out and stake family lots. He recommended
that all the cemetery associations be contacted for
possible money to upgrade the cemetery
Erma Sterling Green - Said said that she could identify
all the family plots there. She also stated that
she had her son buried there recently.
Birdie Mae Smith - said all of her family was buried at
Boonville.
Charles Schultz - asked how long the cemetery association
existed, if they paid dues and did they meet. He
recommended that someone go out with the families to
stake their plots and to set a time table on
burials.
Ruth Peaty - informed the Court that Margaret Van Bavel
had catalogued the graves with tombstones. She
expressed a need to mark the boundaries of cemetery
and reestablish two sections of 100 year old wrought
iron fence that had been vandalized.
There being no further commentary for or against the
closing of the Boonville Cemetery, the County Judge thanked
those in attendance then closed the public hearing.
