of NewYork or California.- Mr. Taylor asked that the Court reconsider.

reconsider.
Jody Quimby reiterated comments from the Commissioners Court meeting on August
30, 2022. Mr. Quimby supports lowering the tax rate to closer to the no new revenue
rate. He stated that while he understands that the County has many expenses, he feels it
is time to tighten the budget and learn to operate frugally. Mr. Quimby gave the
comparison of McLennan County operating at the no new revenue rate.
Lamar Ontko asked that the mostly Republican Commissioners Court support the
Republican Party values of lowering property taxes. She asked that the Court look at
adopting closer to the no new revenue rate.
Once citizens were finished speaking, Judge Peters offered commentary on the matter.
Judge Peters stated that while as a property owner he understands the burden of paying
property taxes, the County is dependent on those taxes as its main source of revenue.
Without the increase in taxes, he asserts that projects such as road and bridge repair
and mental health needs would not be possible. Judge Peters said that the additional
taxes per property will amount to approximately an additional $10.00 per month. He
sympathized with tax payers but stated that progress cannot be made without more
money.
Commissioner Berry stated that the County only receives about twenty percent of the
revenue -from property taxes, a majority goes to the school districts. She'believes that
without the added revenue, the County would. not be able to take care of much needed
projects.
Commissioner Cauley asked that those opposed to the tax increase take a look at the
bigger picture. The County is responsible for the public health and safety of the citizens.
She stated that those are costly, services that the County is charged with providing. She
reiterated the sentiments of the County Judge and Commissioner Berry in stating that in
order to take care of necessary County projects, more money is needed.
Judge Peters asked whether any other citizens in attendance would like to speak. Silas
Garrett came to the podium and thanked the Court for the job that they do. Mr. Garrett
stated that all the public can ask is that the County manage their taxpayer dollars as
responsibly as possible. He feels that the Court is caught between a rock and a hard
place with the decision at hand. He asked that the Court keep the budget as low as
possible.
With no other citizens requesting to speak on the proposed tax rate, the meeting was
adjourned.
