NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
BRAZOS COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT
THE COMMISSIONERS COURT WILL CONDUCT A PUBLIC HEARING ON
FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2003 AT 9:00 A.M. IN THE COMMISSIONERS
COURTROOM OF THE BRAZOS COUNTY COURTHOUSE, 300 EAST 26TH
STREET, SUITE 115, BRYAN, TEXAS.
THE COURT WILL HEAR COMMENTS ON THE PROPOSED TAX INCREASE
FOR 2003.
ALL INTERESTED PESONS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND SAID HEARING AND
PRESENT THEIR CAUSE, IF ANY, FOR OR AGAINST THE TAX INCREASE FOR
2003.
The Courthouse is wheelchair accessible. Handicap parking spaces are available. Any request for sign interpretive

PUBLIC HEARING
AUGUST 29, 2003
The Commissioners' Court of Brazos County, Texas held a
Public Hearing at the Brazos Center in the Courthouse in
Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Friday,
August 29, 2003, with the following members of the Court
present:
Randy Sims, County Judge, Presiding;
Tony Jones, Commissioner of Precinct 1;
Duane Peters, Commissioner of Precinct 2;
Kenny Mallard, Commissioner of Precinct 3;
Carey Cauley, Jr., Commissioner of Precinct 4, Absent;
Karen McQueen, County Clerk.
Attached is a list of the citizens and officials in
attendance.
The purpose of the hearing is to hear commentary for or
against the proposed tax increase for 2003. The County Judge
opened the meeting and announced that the current tax rate is
$.4146 per hundred-dollar valuation. The proposed tax rate
would go to $.4350 per hundred-dollar valuation. The County
Judge then opened the meeting for comments from the floor.
James Biehn - argued against the increase saying
that it is hard on those people on a fixed income.
Commissioner Mallard - asked the Chief Deputy from
the Tax office why the tax valuation is not as high
as both cities. She replied that the county looks
at homes county wide, whereas the cities only look

at their particular area and the growth there.
When averaged, countywide valuation is not as high.
County Judge - noted that to his knowledge, most
rural homes had not been re-evaluated this year.
Commissioner Peters - noted that the County had
raised the exemption for senior citizens from
$50,000 to $75,000. Neither of the cities raised
their exemption.
Commissioner Mallard - attempted to explain to Mr.
Biehn the Court's reason for proposing to raise
taxes. He said it was not something they wanted to
do but that he felt that it was necessary.
County Judge - said they would review the budget
again and see if there is anything that can be
taken out.
Commissioner Jones - spoke about taxes not really
being raised in the last eight years.
There being no further comment, the County Judge declared
the Public hearing closed.

Hearing held August 29, 2003 have been examined and are
